2018 Altima’s High Standards Causes Sedan to Stand Out

A dramatic exterior and thoughtfully designed cabin teeming with creature comforts ensures the Altima stands out among midsize sedans in 2018.

Such ambitious design and the wealth of safety features provides a reason the Altima remains Nissan’s best-selling sedan year after year.

Under the Hood

The 2018 Altima offers a choice between a pair of advanced powertrains – a 2.5-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder and a 3.5-liter DOHC V-6.

The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder features variable valve timing and cutting-edge technology like a thermoplastic resin intake manifold that sees the engine produce 179 horsepower and 177 pound feet of torque. The standard Xtronic transmission facilitates an estimated fuel economy of 27 miles per gallon in the city, 38 miles per gallon on the highway.

The Xtronic transmission’s third-generation D-step Shift logic provides a responsive acceleration from both a dead stop and while in motion, making it easy to pass those slower vehicles.

The 3.5 SL enjoys an advanced, award-winning VQ35DE V-6 boasting 270 horsepower and 251 pound feet of torque. This six cylinder offers low internal friction, optimized air intake resistance and exhaust variable camshaft timing.

Four-wheel independent suspension lends dynamic handling to the Altima. The front suspension relies on an independent front strut design, while the multi-link rear suspension takes its cues from European sports sedans. This design employs high lateral suspension stiffness and ZF SACHS shock absorbers that deliver superior body control and response for a smooth, relaxing ride.

The Electronic Hydraulic Power-Assisted Steering system blends the silky smooth feel of hydraulic steering with the efficiencies of an electric power steering. Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist come standard.

Comfort and Convenience

The 2018 Altima enjoys a wealth of sophisticated finishes and upscale amenities that rival high-end luxury sedans.

An extensive use of soft-touch materials represents fine attention to detail. The Zero Gravity front seats feature an articulated seat shape with continuous support from pelvis to chest.

Woven fabric seating with a six-way adjustable driver's seat and a four-way adjustable front passenger seat, black interior trim and chrome finish accents come standard on the 2018 Altima.

The 2.5 SR platform comes with sport interior accents like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters and leather-wrapped gear shifter.

Bose designers helped craft a premium Altima with a superlative sound system. This optional model features nine speakers (including woofers) that deliver rich sound and ideal acoustics.

The 2018 Altima also offers an Advanced Drive-Assist display revolving around a customizable, four-inch color display that provides the driver with key information in the center of the instrument display between the tachometer and speedometer.

Safety

The 2018 Altima offers a wealth of available safety and convenience features. Automatic Emergency Braking and Intelligent Forward Collision Warning comes standard, while the radar-based Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Intelligent Cruise Control are available as options.

Automatic Emergency Braking offers visual display and audio warnings that alert the driver of a potential frontal collision and reduce speed if necessary. The technology can apply the brakes when a collision is unavoidable, helping reduce the speed of the impact and severity of the impact.

Intelligent Forward Collision Warning alerts the driver to risks that lie ahead. This system senses the relative velocity and distance of the vehicle directly ahead, as well as the vehicle traveling in front of the preceding one to help alert the driver of a potential forward collision.

Radar-based Blind Spot Warning comes standard on SV and SL models. These upgraded Altimas also include the Rear Cross Traffic Alert system that warns of detected vehicles approaching from either the right or left side of the rear when in reverse.

Intelligent Cruise Control is optional for the 2.5 SL and standard on the 3.5 SLl. This safety feature relies on radar to maintain a set distance between the Altima and the vehicle ahead, and even brakes to maintain that distance.

Nissan’s Advanced AirBag System with dual stage supplemental front air bags, seat belt sensors, front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted curtain side-impact airbags comes standard on all Altimas.
